  • Literature
    • Chapter books will be read at home prior to class (the child can read on their own or a parent can read to them). Class time will be similar to a book club with discussions, small group activities, and individual reflection. The following books will be read slowly as enjoyable supplements for your student’s education this semester.
      • The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street (The Vanderbeekers, 1) by Karina Yan Glaser, ISBN 13: 978-0544876392. The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It’s practically another member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have eleven days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded Beiderman just how wonderful they are. And all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home.
      • Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin, ISBN 13:978-0316038638.  In the valley of Fruitless mountain, a young girl named Minli lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents. In the evenings, her father regales her with old folktales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man on the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life’s questions. Inspired by these stories, Minli sets off on an extraordinary journey to find the Old Man on the Moon to ask him how she can change her family’s fortune. She encounters an assorted cast of characters and magical creatures along the way, including a dragon who accompanies her on her quest for the ultimate answer.
  • Science –The Physical World Around Us
    • We will spend our year delving into topics that students encounter every day. This semester will start us out with matter and momentum, force and friction. We will see these things in action, try them out for ourselves, and even conduct experiments at home to present in class.
  • Art
    • This semester will take us on another exciting romp through different art media and movements.  We will learn about different artists, dabbling in their styles and many 2D and 3D art forms.
  • Journey From Past to Present
    • Come along on a creative journey to discover people and places of the past and present. We will fly across the globe to experience the art, culture, history, and geography of ancient civilizations as well as those of today. We’ll do this through a variety of art media, games, imagination, and fun!
