  • Literature – Christy Thomas
    • Class time will be similar to a book club with discussions, small group activities, and individual reflection. The following book will be read slowly as an enjoyable supplement for your student’s education this semester.
        • The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Rivalry, Adventure, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements (Young Readers Edition) by Sam Kean, ISBN 13: 978-0316388276.  The periodic table is a crowning scientific achievement, but it’s also a treasure trove of adventure, greed, betrayal, and obsession. The fascinating tales in The Disappearing Spoon follow elements on the table as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, conflict, the arts, medicine, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.
        • The Barren Grounds: The Misewa Saga, Book One by David Robertson, ISBN 13.  Morgan and Eli, two Indigenous children forced away from their families and communities, are brought together in a foster home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They each feel disconnected, from their culture and each other, and struggle to fit in at school and at their new home — until they find a secret place, walled off in an unfinished attic bedroom. A portal opens to another reality, Askí, bringing them onto frozen, barren grounds, where they meet Ochek (Fisher). The only hunter supporting his starving community, Misewa, Ochek welcomes the human children, teaching them traditional ways to survive. But as the need for food becomes desperate, they embark on a dangerous mission. Accompanied by Arik, a sassy Squirrel they catch stealing from the trapline, they try to save Misewa before the icy grip of winter freezes everything — including them.
  • Art Appreciation – Guy Sandhusen
    • Let’s explore the visual arts and a variety of art mediums and techniques used to create two and three-dimensional works of art throughout history. Students will also study the history of art with a focus on different artists/time periods/styles each week while working on small samples or projects corresponding to the styles being studied.
  • Go With the Flow! Improv, Drama and Learning to Connect, and Communicate- Keely Kirkus
      • Teens/Tweens are lively and need a creative outlet. Improv is fun and exciting! No matter how you say it Tweens/Teens + Improv is a perfect combo. While having a good time teens will also learn some valuable skills (shhh don’t let them know they are learning): Positivity, communication, and listening – yes listening! Working together to build confidence, self-expression, and more! During these classes, students will have fun while creating a supportive environment for all to learn the basics of improv, storytelling, and stagecraft. During our introductory course, students will explore the elements of improv by learning the core fundamentals and principles of improv, with a focus on various games and exercises that encourage trust, communication, agreement (“yes and”); active listening, character, status, and making your scene partner look like a genius. Students will learn to use “yes – and”, playing at the top of their intelligence. Students will also learn basic short-form improvisation games and how to use ideas of improv as a tool in their lives.
  • Environmental Science – Janel Zinn
    • We will explore a variety of relevant environmental topics such as global warming, food and water production, alternative energy sources, endangered species, land-use issues, and more. We will conduct some experiments in class together. Students will research some topics on their own and we will sneak in some math and related science topics (chemistry, physics, biology, and earth science).

Minimum Required Enrollment: 7

Course Length: 4.5-hour class once per week/ 16 weeks / 72 hours/semester
