Lower Elementary Academy (Grades 2-4)

This is a one-day per week, 4.5-hour drop-off program for students that runs from 9:30 am – 2:00 pm. The parent is NOT required to stay on campus during this time.  There will be two teachers in the classroom at all times and all teachers have had a background check completed and are fully vaccinated. We cover literature, art, music and movement, and science with the students. They eat a home-packed nut-free lunch and have lots of outside recess time. We run this program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays. You choose the day that works best for you. Students are dropped off in our kiss-and-ride line and picked up at the end of the day in the same manner. Caregivers never need to leave their car!

      • Literature
        • Chapter books will be read at home prior to class (the child can read on their own or a parent can read to them). Class time will be similar to a book club with discussions, small group activities, and individual reflection. The following books will be read this semester.
        • The White Elephant by Sid Fleischman. Run-Run, a young elephant trainer, discovers the answer when he incurs the fury of the prince. The boy’s punishment? The gift of an elephant, white as a cloud. From that moment forward, the curse reveals itself. According to tradition, so rare an elephant cannot be allowed to work for its keep. It is poor Run-Run who must feed the beast the hundreds of pounds of food it eats each day, and scrub it clean, and brush its pom-pom of a tail, and wash behind its ears, and, above all, keep it from doing any work. Oh, if only Run-Run could make the magnificent white elephant disappear! Clever as a magician, he does—but the curse has tricks of its own for Run-Run.
        • The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies.  Here is a clever blend of humor, math wizardry, and business know-how. As it captures the one-of-a-kind bond between brother and sister, this poignant novel also subtly explores how arguments can escalate beyond anyone’s intent.
        • When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller. Would you make a deal with a magical tiger? This uplifting story brings Korean folklore to life as a girl goes on a quest to unlock the power of stories and save her grandmother.
        • The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. Young Milo is bored in school and bored with life, not seeing the point of much of anything. In the midst of this funk, he comes home from school to find a mysterious tollbooth in his apartment and, for lack of anything better to do, hops in his little electric car and drives through it. Ultimately, accompanied by a Watch Dog named Tock and a strange creature called the Humbug, he sets forth on a quest to rescue the princesses Rhyme and Reason from dire captivity, seeing many peculiar sights and meeting many interesting characters along the way — as well as getting an introduction to numerous academic concepts.
      • Science – Earth Science
        • Earthquakes and volcanoes, plate tectonics, and geologic time, we will be continuing our exploration of Earth Systems. Each week we will use a variety of learning modalities to introduce students to the broad range of ideas gathered under this topic.
      • Art – Hands-on Art
        • This semester will take us on another exciting romp through different art media and movements.  We will learn about different artists, dabbling in their styles and many 2D and 3D art forms.
      • Music & Movement
      • This year will involve music and movement from different genres! We will be listening to music from different eras of history and appreciating the work these artists put into making their music. The movement we do will have us learning and even creating our own choreography in many ways and styles. Through music & movement, we will be building connections and awareness of the world around us while having fun! All you need to bring is your mind and body.
