High School Physics

Teacher: Ed Linz

This course is designed to provide a detailed understanding of basic physics by focusing on energy in a 2- two-hour classes a week covering one semester of high school physics in one quarter.

The course will be taught during quarter 2 and 3 and will meet for two hours, twice a week. We will cover all topics taught in the Physics 1 curriculum for high school students, including Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, Light, Sound, and Nuclear. There will be labs and demonstrations. Students will be expected to maintain a notebook for observations, class notes, and lab analysis. Homework will be assigned. There will be two tests per quarter.

The mathematics involved will be on the Algebra I level. A scientific calculator must be brought to class, but no equations must be memorized. Several experiments are an integral part of the curriculum. The goal of the course is to develop an understanding of basic Physics principles by understanding that energy is the common thread of the discipline. Students are required to have a 200+ page spiral bound notebook and a scientific calculator capable of doing sine, cosine and tangent functions.

The following schedule is the quarter 2 and 3 dates with noted holiday breaks.

Quarter 2 28 October – 20 December
(no classes on 11, 25-29 November)
Quarter 3 13 January – 6 March
(no classes on 20 January, and 18 February)
Q3 Makeup Week 9-13 March
