Mock Trial Quarter 2

Teacher: Renee Jackson

Quarter 2: In this course we will simulate a jury trial on a criminal topic chosen based on student interest, possibly an appeal of a case from the first quarter mock trial course. We will review the rules of evidence examining witnesses, and learn about jury selection, opening arguments, closing arguments. The last day of class will be a mock trial, in which volunteers will be needed to serve as witnesses and jurors.

Quarter 3: In this course we will simulate a jury trial on a civil topic chosen based on student interest, possibly an appeal of a case from the first quarter mock trial course. We will review the topics from the first two quarters of mock trials and learn about exhibits and expert witnesses. The last day of class will be a mock trial, in which volunteers will be needed to serve as witnesses and jurors.

Quarter 4: In this course we will simulate appellate review of a case chosen based on student interest, possibly one of the cases from an earlier quarter of mock trial. Students will draft briefs and deliver oral arguments before a panel of volunteers acting as judges who will ask them questions about their arguments. We may also take a field trip to see an appellate court hear oral arguments.
