This is a one day per week, 4.5-hour drop-off program for students in grades 3-6. The parent is not required to stay on campus during this time. All teachers have had a background check completed.

  • 9:30-10:15 Art (Cheryl Demas): Students will use graphite, crayons, and watercolor paint, and chalk pastels on drawings to reinforce the science and literature topics they have learned. Students will work on a project using concepts learned from literature and science class that they can take home at the end of the quarter.
  • 10:20 – 11:05   Science (Renee Jackson): Quarter 1: Astronomy: This class will cover the fundamentals of astronomy.  Each class will include hands on activities to reinforce key concepts.  Topics will include the planets, our moon (and other moons), stars and constellations (including our sun), space exploration, and more. Quarter 2: History: Native People of Virginia and Life with European Settlers
  • 11:05 – 11:30  Break
  • 11:30 -12:00 Lunch
  • 12:00-12:45 Fundamentals of Music Theory and Musicianship (Pious Honny):  Music is fun! And understanding the fundamentals of music theory gives students a base for playing all kinds of music. In this class, I use a mixture of a piano keyboard, drums, flashcards and other media to engage students and start their path to becoming a musician. By the end of the course, students will: understand basic musical elements such as rhythm, intervals, keys, scales, chords and harmony, and know how to read written music, including the signs and terminology commonly used.
  • 12:50 – 1:40 (Julia Davis): Literature: Students will read books that revolve around the theme of survival.  They will start with Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Then the class will decide on which book they want to read next – Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George, Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell, or The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare.  During class students will work on activities that focus on vocabulary, story elements, and comprehension. They will also have opportunities to participate in class discussions about topics discussed in books. Students will need to bring a 3-ring binder, paper, and pen/pencil to class.  Students will also be responsible for providing their own books.  Weekly reading will be done at home using whatever method is best for the student and class time will be spent on activities and discussions.
